WHAT'S NEW IN THE IDF?
The IDF prides itself on being a modern military -- making use of new advancements and innovations in order to best defend the State of Israel. From homemade weapons to the world’s best tanks, from converted light planes to the most advanced aircraft, and from torpedo boats to submarines with the best technology, since its inception the IDF’s primary mission has remained the same: to protect the border and defend the State of Israel. In honor of the new year, we take a look back at the past 12 months and all the changes the IDF has made throughout the year.
THIS YEAR, THE IDF INVENTED NEW COMBAT TECHNIQUES…
New Ways to Fight the Enemy:
The IDF’s Herev Battalion, made up of members of Israel’s Druze community, has many years of experience performing unique missions near the Israel-Lebanon border of Israel’s northern region. Referred to as the IDF’s “spearhead on the Lebanon border,” the Herev Battalion is tasked with effectively fighting against the Hezbollah terror organization. Recently, the battalion used its wealth of operational experience in the region to develop new combat techniques for fighting against Hezbollah. These new techniques were tested two months ago for the first time in an intensive battalion-wide exercise.

The results from the exercise were sent to officers throughout the IDF in order to assist in building a new combat doctrine for fighting against terror organizations.
EMBRACED NEW TECHNOLOGY...
A Simulated World:
The IDF welcomed three new advanced digital simulators this year, allowing soldiers to be trained better and faster while further advancing the on-screen digital battlefield that has become an essential aspect of IDF training.
(1) The Advanced Laser Simulator: simulator operators can now analyze every bullet fired and give soldiers constructive feedback, improving the soldiers’ accuracy and reducing the margin of error during combat.
The IDF welcomed three new advanced digital simulators this year, allowing soldiers to be trained better and faster while further advancing the on-screen digital battlefield that has become an essential aspect of IDF training.
(1) The Advanced Laser Simulator: simulator operators can now analyze every bullet fired and give soldiers constructive feedback, improving the soldiers’ accuracy and reducing the margin of error during combat.
(2) Navy Simulator: the new system simulates the view from a ship in realistic detail, mimicking any possible scenario that a soldier may encounter out at sea, ensuring ultimate preparedness.
(3) Air Force UAV Array Simulator: Using the new simulator, operators are able to put trainees through particularly challenging flight scenarios. The simulator consists of several rooms, where each room emulates a UAV operating caravan, with instructors analyzing each flight using an advanced recording system.

New Year, New Robot:
Last month, the elite Yahalom unit, a commando force of the Combat Engineering Corps, inaugurated the new Talon IV for the purpose of clearing planted explosives.

The special forces unit operates in various terrains, trained in the diffusion of bombs, minefield neutralization, and destruction of enemy infrastructure and outposts. Specializing in robotics, the unit aims to bolster its ability to thwart attempts to target Israelis using planted explosives.
OPENED NEW DOORS….
Contending with Home Front Emergencies:
“Our homes are becoming a war front,” said commanding officer of the Home Front Command, Maj. Gen. Eyal Eizenberg, causing the IDF Home Front Command to establish a new search and rescue brigade last month. They did so by uniting four existing battalions (Shahar, Kedem, Tavor and Ram) under the banner of a new brigade, allowing for the Home Front Command to better contend with various chemical, biological, and nuclear emergencies.

TESTED NEW METHODS OF TEACHING…
No Stone Unturned:
The IDF’s EITAN unit (Unit for Detecting Missing Soldiers) supervises all recovery attempts of missing soldiers in Israel. A new course, held twice a year, takes full advantage of the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and has helped all IDF units be on the same page in terms of how to operate in these delicate situations. In the new course, the Israel Air Force’s EITAN Unit teaches UAV operators how to serve as the IDF’s eyes in the skies over enemy territory in order to thwart the next attempt of abduction.

The IDF is in the middle of a massive transition to the Negev region of southern Israel. The main reason behind the IDF’s move to the desert? New training bases, which will be equipped with “smart classrooms”: advanced facilities and cutting-edge technology designed to enhance the preparation of soldiers for their roles in the IDF. The facilities will feature advanced screens, computers to allow for independent learning and a sophisticated electronic library that will enable soldiers to download lessons and review them.

The project has civilian, social, and environmental implications as well, as the move will lead to a significant increase in IDF human resources and further investment in the region, attracting large numbers of IDF civilian staff who will come to live and work in the area.

Instagram: In January 2013, the IDF launched a new Instagram campaign, shaping the way people view life behind being a soldier.
Google+: This year, the IDF even ventured into Google with the the social networking service, Google+, creating a new and unique way to stay up-to-date with all things IDF.
From new units to advancing defensive techniques, the IDF has continued to progress in order to ensure it remains at its best. Looking ahead, the IDF remains at the forefront of new global innovations, developing the most cutting-edge techniques to remain stronger than ever.
