RAMALLAH (WAFA) – Head of Fatah team to the reconciliation talks with Hamas, Azzam Ahmad, said Thursday that Hamas was not ready for reconciliation and that it has not abided by the agreed date to form a unity government and to set a date for presidential and legislative elections.
Fatah and Hamas have agreed on May 14 to conclude their reconciliation talks with the formation of a unity government of independent technocrats headed by President Mahmoud Abbas by August 14 along with setting a date for national elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Ahmad said in a radio interview that Fatah cannot remain silent to Hamas whims and will therefore take the necessary decisions regarding the new situation at the proper time.
“We have started as of yesterday studying the steps we need to make and we are going to take clear and painful decisions,” he said.
He said there are many ideas floating around that will sidestep the agreements signed with Hamas.
However, he said, Fatah will wait for few more days to see how things are going to turn out in Egypt, the main mediator in the Palestinian reconciliation.
“The future of the Gaza Strip will be closely and carefully considered,” said Ahmad, adding that “there is no way the de facto situation Hamas is trying to impose on everyone will be acceptable.”
